Episode Notes: -Family Podcast episode in Sacramento, CA -Younger sister Janelle Williams is graduating from Sacramento State University with Journalism degree -How does it feel now that you have walked in both the Black Grad and Communications graduation? Having graduated from college feels as if it is solidifying the upcoming transition into true adulthood. Feels its somewhat scary due to not having a true plan. -If you could leave now and go straight to working and living in your dream, then what would it be like? It would involve traveling, meeting new people, and of course working as a writer. -Utilizing the tools that you already have in order to reach your dreams. -How does it feel about the bleak outlook that the elders seem to have on our futures in this country? Feels that her school and journalism department did a good job of preparing her in being a multifaceted writer. This includes multimedia, graphic reporting, and traditional writing. Due to this prep Janelle does not have a negative outlook. -In what direction of writing do wish to go? Blogger, reporter of wars, genre? News coverage. Previously reported on the Stephon Clark murder through The Hornet newspaper and through participation with BSU. Felt that being a journalist and capturing everyones opinion was how she contributed to the cause.

Thoughts on Sac State 2019 Black Grad Highlights: Janelle believed it was fun to participate. Also was cool to be able to graduate with friends who were in different majors. Also liked seeing all of the energy and black students. Improvement: Believed the facility could have been more appropriate and that the tech side could’ve been better for the families.

Perky’s Highlights: Good to see as many black people. The Keynote speaker was great. There were some stand out audience members (such as someone grabbing the mic). Was able to see the enormity of Sacramento State University. Perky’s Improvements: Wished there were more Black Oriented music and other related stuff. The overflow room was not properly ran and felt very distant from the live room. Should consider a bleacher style graduation setting for engagement.

How are we planning for our future and future generations.

Family Interview: -As the parents of another graduate, how does it feel? Feel proud as parents and feel accomplished, and just ready for the third child to follow in older siblings footsteps. Feel that Janelle has been able to mature and grow a lot in the four years of her being in school. Proud of Ashley “Perky” for graduating and getting degrees as well. -Why would other people want or why should we encourage school? Feels college is great for making a well-rounded person. Can learn more about the world in general, such as culture, new perspectives, and expanding ones knowledge. Exposure to new things, people, and ideas. School is also usually a safe space to meet and learn. Also, due to the timeframe that people usually go to college is that it helps with the transition into adulthood. The friends that one can make in college is usually lasting as well. How do feel college has shaped you, Janelle? Feels that it has matured her and opened her mind to new things due to diversity.

Cal State Sac State and UC Riverside are the most diverse of the schools in California

Some states/cities are saying that at minimum you should have a Bachelors in order to be successful in that area. Such as Chicago.

Be aware of your options in your state. -Many community colleges are free to the residents. Options are available for all age ranges and backgrounds. -Can audit classes if interested in seeing how a college class is ran. -INVEST!!!!! Financial planning is the most important planning. Reach out to anyone on this podcast episode for financial planning assistance. The government will not have many programs set for the aging to rely on for the future generations.

How does it feel to shift to retirement? Why are you looking forward to it? -Looking forward to having full ownership over work schedule and travel schedule. Financially planned for retirement.

Any work experience can assist in your overall dream. Just be mindful of what area you’re working within and how it adds to your dream.

Final thoughts: You do not have to plan every part of your life. Make sure to explore and take all of the opportunities that you can. Reflect on what you are experiencing. Being aware of who lives in your community in order to network and build proficiently.
